Delaware drivers – please drive carefully and defensively. There have been an unusual number of deadly car and motorcycle accidents in Delaware this Spring. You should always be on alert for other vehicles even when you know you have the right-of-way. You cannot assume that simply because you are being safe, another driver is being safe as well. Drunken drivers and distracted drivers, such as texting drivers, as well as inexperienced drivers are not paying attention to the roadway let alone Delaware right-of-way laws.
Car, truck and motorcycle accidents can be fatal or result in serious injuries. In fact, within the past month, several Delaware drivers were either killed or seriously injured in accidents. Over the course of the last month, there have been several serious car, truck and motorcycle accidents throughout the state of Delaware, four of which resulted in fatalities.
Four Fatal Car & Motorcycle Accidents in Delaware Over the Past Month
Three of the four fatal accidents occurred in New Castle County. The most recent accident occurred over the weekend. On April 20, a two vehicle car accident occurred in Greenville, Delaware. Another fatal accident occurred on I-495 in Edgemoor when an SUV went over a guardrail and struck a car traveling in the opposite direction. Because the accident occurred at a high rate of speed, at least one person was killed.
The other two fatal accidents occurred last month. On March 19, 2013, a single car accident occurred in Middletown when the driver of an SUV veered from Bayview Road and struck a concrete pole.
The next day, on March 20, 2013, a motorcycle accident in Dover resulted in a fatality. The motorcycle rider was killed and her husband seriously injured when their motorcycle collided with a car that pulled into its path.
In addition to these fatal accidents, there have been several serious car and truck accidents. Also in New Castle County, several teens were injured in a two vehicle car accident in Hockessin last month. Several other car accidents occurred this month as well.
Aside from drunk driving, other causes of car and truck accidents include:
- cell phone use/texting,
- speeding, and
- reckless/careless driving.
In addition, head-on collisions and intersection accidents often result in serious injuries. Suggested reading: Delaware Car & Truck Accident Law – Intersection and Left Hand Turn Accidents. Drivers should be sure to keep their eyes and hands on the wheel at all times and eliminate distractions such as using a cell phone, eating or drinking. Drivers must practice defensive driving and always be on the lookout for other drivers on the road.
